Battle Zone, by PNT Software $6
Reviewed May 2002

The old Tank games die hard. Battle Zone is a new rendition of the Tank battle type of game. It doesn't have fancy 3D, but it's just pretty enough and fun enough to get you hooked! Developed by PNT Software, the same developer that brought you another new rendition of a classic game Battle Marine, Battle Zone is a strategy action game with emphasis on action.

The objective in this game is to protect your base from enemy tanks with your own trusty tank. Destroying all enemy tanks completes the level. There are 30 levels in Battle Zone with 3 types of terrain, each with a creatively structured battlefield. You can start any of the 30 levels without having to beat it to advance. You will start with 3 tanks, and can pick up many power-ups such as Base Repair, Tank Repair, Shields, Extra Life, Stop Time, Destroy All Enemies and Upgrade Tank. When you can, you must pick up some power-ups to help you complete the level.

The classic-look graphics are very sharp, which is one of the things that will appeal to gamers. Movements, shooting, explosions are very smooth. There aren't a lot of variations in difficulty levels or speed of the game. There is only normal mode in this game, but the difficulty levels do change a little bit depending on the battlefield layout. In some levels it's easier to defend the base; in others you'll find it's easier to attack enemy tanks. In some levels it's not hard to accomplish both. The speed of tanks is pretty much the same: some enemy tanks move faster than others, some are slower but more powerful.

The music and sound effects have a military theme, which fits the game well. The controls are smooth with the D-pad. The game takes about 1MB space and can run nicely from a CF card. I had a couple freezes on my Jornada after some intensive hours of playing.

If you are a battle tank fan, you must check out this game.

Playing Hints and Tips:

Get all the power-ups you can without sacrificing your base. Some levels, it's the only way you can destroy the enemy tanks.

Graphics Simple graphics, yet so sharp and pretty that it works very well for this game.
Sound Music and sound effects fit the military theme. Not a big selection.
Fun Meter The game play requires just enough thinking to keep you interested, and mixes some intensive action. It's fun for both adults and kids.
Addictivity I was surprised how additive this game is. The replay value should be very high as well.
