Logic Squares, by Tracker Software, $15
Reviewed November 2002

There are many logic games, some require you to figure out who lives with whom, others want you to figure out which house they live in and the color of the house, all based on the one-liner clues provided in the game. Even though the possibility of variable elements is endless, Logic Square is modeled after the basic logic games and puts the words into shapes and colors.

If you are a logic puzzle fan, you will find this game intriguing because it provides you everything you need to solve the puzzles without using pen and paper. The puzzle board consists of 9 (3x3) color blocks; each block has the same 9-squares design. The clues are listed under the color blocks. You can get additional clues by tapping on the Clue menu. The goal is to identify the correct color of each block. There are 3 difficulty levels, and the computer generates puzzles randomly. You will get more definite clues such as “Green is in the middle center” in the easier levels, where there are more relational logic clues such as “Green is immediately to the right of Red” in harder levels. If you ever get stuck on a puzzle, you can go to the solution screen for answers.

The board layout is very clever. Based on each clue, you can eliminate the possible positions of any color by marking Ns (for No) on the color blocks. This process enables players to narrow down to an answer right on the board. There is also an option for players to change the background color if you dislike the default Gray. The color blocks provide a simple representation of the logic in this game, though a 3D designed might have been more interesting. The game menu is on the bottom of the game board, giving easy access to difficulty levels, solutions page, high scoreboard, help menu and more.

Even though there aren’t many sound effects in this game other than a cheery sound after a puzzle’s been solved, Logic Squares makes a great escape from non-stop shooting games or mindless puzzle games. Your brain might enjoy a little logic exercise once in a while.

The game supports all Pocket PCs running WinCE 3.0 (including Pocket PC and Pocket PC 2002) and takes hardly any memory.

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics The colored blocks are clever representation of the logic. The 9 squares in each block help you to solve the puzzles without using additional tools. It would have been more fun if there were action houses or other 3D images.
Sound There aren’t a lot of sound effects.
Fun Meter Great game for logic puzzle fans. Each game is short and sweet, great for handheld gaming.
Addictivity Quite addictive with 3 difficulty levels to beat. The puzzles are generated randomly so that you won’t play the same puzzle over and over. Once you get the method down, it becomes quite easy even at hard level.
