JadeDragon's reviews and playing tips: Palm OS games

RifleSLUGs-II:The Invasion by Paragon Software, Price: $11.95
Reviewed August, 2003 by Noodles & Anime

RifleSLUGs-II:The Invasion is a strategy shooter similar to Snails, which is for PPC. RifleSLUGs-II was developed by Paragon Software, also the makers of AnotherBall, One For All Solitaires Collection, and the original RifleSLUGSs. To play this game you need a minimum of Palm OS v4.0 and a color high resolution screen (320 x 320 pixels). We played the game on the Sony Clie PEG-SJ33 and PEG-NX70V. Both had no problems playing the game.

You are a team of yellow slugs battling the evil red slugs for dominance of each level. The game is not over until all of the red or yellow slugs are pulverized. The yellow slugs are armed with 15 different weapons, some are unlimited, but most are limited in quantity. You have the option to change the default number of weapons, but you must complete a level to advance to the next of eight playable environments.

RifleSLUGs-II allows you to adjust the A.I. of the red slugs and the skill ability of your slugs. There is also a fun two player mode if you and a buddy feel like slugging it out. According to the authors, there will be a multi-player mode in their upcoming release. “Soon we are planning to release the upgrade of this game, we are going to make it possible playing via Internet and Bluetooth/Infrared connection.”

The game offers 8 levels of richly colored two-dimensional graphic playing grounds. Even on low brightness settings, the game is easy to see and play. The game allows you to view the game board in a standard view as well as overall picture of the battlefield. The standard view is easy to play, but the overall view shrinks down the slugs a bit too much. A more customizable zoom feature would be nice in an update. In standard mode you can scroll to various parts of the screen by holding the stylus to the screen and dragging, which was very helpful in game-play.

Regrettably, there is not much sound or music in the game. There is good startup and ending music, but none during game-play. The sounds are limited and simple when the weapons are fired and slugs are hit.

Overall this is a great, fun, challenging, and addicting game. The game is easy to pickup and start playing immediately. The multiple weapons, environmental changes and games adjustable A.I. make this a great game for your Palm powered device.

Playing Hint and Tips

This is not your run of the mill “run around and kill anything that moves” game. You must be mindful of wind direction and velocity when firing your weapon. Though you thought you’d never use it after High School, Physics really helps when determining the angle and force of the projectile. In this game, friendly fire and self-inflicted blows will hurt! The slugs sit on various platforms that make up the world you are fighting in, while the slugs are affected by gravity, their platforms are not. The platforms will remain in place until they are blasted away. The gamer has a limited time per shot, so keep an eye on that timer!

Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):

Graphics Excellent 2D graphics. Rich colors, but the textures are a little flat.
Sound Not much of it. There are cute little songs that are played on load, and when you win or lose. There is little to no sound during game play.
Fun Meter This game is a blast, from the multiple weapons to the “smack” talking red slugs who beckon you to blast them to pieces. If you enjoy strategy shooters, you won’t be sorry.
Addictivity There’s only eight screens?! I couldn’t put the blasted thing down until I beat all 8 levels! What adds to the lasting appeal of the game is the ability to adjust the computer A.I. and the sudden “Death Mode” mode.
